Harley is located about 1 mile down the road from Wentworth and is the only other major village wholly contained within Wentworth Parish. Due to recent expansion it is probably now more populous than Wentworth itself.
Click here for information on Harley Horseshoe Football Club a Sunday League football team running from the Harley Horseshoe. this is the only football team in the immediate local area and they are keen to involve people from harley, wentworth and the immediate surrounding area with the club.

Scholes village is located about 2 miles from Wentworth near the Southern boundary of Wentworth Park and Keppels Column.

The next Wentworth Youth Theatre production is a story is based on the plight of young orphans who were sent out from orphanages in Britain to live and work in Australia. It is a moving and personal tale which was first performed by Wentworth Youth Theatre in 2007 and one which has recently been in the headlines with the recent apology by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for the for years of abuse and pain suffered by thousands of children sent to Australia from Britain.

The musical is called ‘Echoes’ and focuses on one young girl, Mo and follows her emotional and powerful journey as a young girl of 8 from Britain to Australia and her ultimate reunion with her mother back in Britain in 1968.

The exact dates and times have yet to be confirmed but it is hoped that the show will be performed in ‘The Mechanics’ Wentworth around the 22nd and 23rd of March 2010 and at Montgomery Hall in Wath on the 25th and 26th of March. The show will also be performed as part of the Sheffield Festival of Music and Drama at a theatre in Sheffield in late June / early July 2010.

Historical Photos

We would like to complement the maps by including old photos of the Wentworth area. If anyone has any photos which they will allow us to use on the site then please contact us with details.

For visitors looking to stay in the area, there are a number of good hotels in various price ranges.

• In Wentworth itself, the Rockingham Arms has accomodation in a block of converted cottages across the road from the pub. Phone 01226 742075 for details.
• In nearby Tankersley, the Tankersley Manor Hotel and Conference Centre offers pricier and (presumably) more luxurious accomodation. Phone 01226 744700
• Also at Tankersley you will find the confusingly named Wentworth Travel Inn, which we assume offers the same good but basic standard of accomodation as all the other Travel Inns in the country.
• Between Chapeltown and Hood Hill, the Norfolk Arms pub has a modern accomodation annexe. Phone 0114 240 2016.
• For those looking for a “country house” style hotel, the 3* Whitley Hall Hotel, near Grenoside is a good choice. Phone 0114 245 4444.
• A new hotel Park Inn Rothertham has opened serving the Wath/Manvers business area close to Wentworth. Visit here for details.

Please note that the author has never actually stayed in any of these places, so any feedback from anyone who has would be most welcome!

Public Houses

In Wentworth itself, the George and Dragon and Rockingham Arms pubs are justifiably popular (and usually very busy!). Both serve a wide range of food and drink. The “George” is a particular favourite of real ale enthusiasts and recently won the local CAMRA Pub of the Year award; we recommend the award-winning WPA (“woppa”) produced by Wentworth’s own village brewery!

Nearby, you might also like to try the recently-refurbished Horseshoe at Harley, the Bay Horse at Scholes, the Norfolk Arms near Hood Hill (very popular for its food) or the Commercial in Chapeltown (another good real ale pub).

Restaurants & Cafes

There is only one restaurant in the village, Le Bistro, which opens most lunchtimes and evenings and serves an excellent range of food at very reasonable prices. Be sure to book in advance, especially at weekends!

For lighter meals and snacks there are cafes at the Garden Centre and at the Arts, Crafts and Antiques centre in the Old Building Yard. Refreshments are sometimes also available at the Mechanics Institute when it is open for events.

Nearby Restaurants

There are a number of good restaurants nearby, including the Greenhead House at Chapeltown, the restaurants attached the Whitley Hall and Tankersley Manor hotels and, a little further afield, the Olde Mustard Pot in Midhopestones. Alternatively, take a trip into the centre of Sheffield for a wide selection of restaurants to suit all tastes.

The Wentworth Village Community Association (or “WVCA”) is a registered charity set up to co-ordinate the activities of various local voluntary groups who provide amenities for residents in Wentworth and the surrounding “area of benefit” (Street, Lea Brook, Hoober and Nether Haugh).

The WVCA has a number of subcommittees which run various different aspects of the Association’s business such as the Sports and Social committee, which organises events such as the annual firework display and the Millennium Committee which was responsible for organising many of the Millennium events in the area and production a Parish Map.

One of the Association’s main responsibilities is the management of the Mechanics Institute (or village hall) which is held under lease from Rotherham Borough Council. This building, which was originally donated by the Fitzwilliam family for the furtherance of their workers’ education, is the focal point of village life and is used for all kinds of events including the Youth Club, W.I., Old Peoples club and British Legion. It also attracts a number of commercial users, such as a Doctor’s surgery, dance class and monthly Craft Fairs.
