Antiques Roadshow coming to Wentworth Woodhouse

BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 36th series in the grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse, near Rotherham, on Thursday, 19th September, 2013. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free.

This will be presenter Fiona Bruce’s sixth year with the Roadshow and she says, “Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a show that you already love to watch. Exploring the human story behind every object is what makes Antiques Roadshow so fascinating. And everyone loves the agony and ecstasy of the ‘what’s it worth? moment. The AR isn’t just about antiques – it’s history, beauty and drama all wrapped up in one.’

Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts.

People with large pieces of furniture or other big items can send details and photographs of their objects to:

Wentworth Woodhouse now offering tours

Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest private house in the United Kingdom, is now offering house tours.

The house has been entirely in private hands & completely inaccessible to the public since 1988, when Sheffield City Polytechnic (now Sheffield Hallam University) vacated the premises due to the prohibitive cost of maintenance, so the chance of having a look inside the house is something I’m sure locals & tourists alike would relish.

For further information about tours please contact the house administrator Dawn Smith by email.

Fundraising walk – The Rhyming Ramble – 7th July 2012

Join Yorkshireman and poet Ian McMillan, sponsored by PayPlus Payroll Services, Ian will be talking along the borders of Barnsley and Rotherham, raising money for children’s charity SAFE@LAST to help young runaways.

Meeting in the village of Wentworth, Ian will lead the ramble, regaling all with tales of Wentworth’s rich historical past. Be sure to look out for sites of interest along the way including the Roundhouse, Forge and not forgetting Wentworth Woodhouse, a grade 1 listed building with the longest facade in Europe.

The Wentworth Area

Surrounded by the industrial towns of South Yorkshire, it is remarkable that Wentworth village and the surrounding area have escaped any major development over the last two hundred years. Compare our 1855 map with a modern map of the area and, with the exception of the “new” church (1877), you will find very few changes.

This preservation of the village and surrounding countryside is due in a large part to the efforts over the years of Fitzwilliam (Wentworth) Estates and, more recently, the village Amenity Trust. These bodies still own most of the land and buildings in the area and do an excellent job of maintaining a traditional rural environment in the heart of one of the most densely populated parts of the country.

Perhaps more important still is the part played by the local community in preserving the character of the area. Many of the residents, some of whose families have been in the area for generations, still work in agricultural and the traditional village industries. They, and others who now work outside the village, continue to take an active role in the life of the area through organisations such as the Parish Council, Parochial Church Council, Wentworth Village Community Association and Wentworth Womens Institute.

Whether you are a local or a visitor, we hope you find something of interest in these pages.
